Don’t Own a Business? Here’s How to Avoid Paying Taxes Legally

Wondering how to avoid paying taxes legally if you work for someone else?

“Do we put our name down as the trust name on the paperwork?”

It’s an excellent question, and here’s the good news—even if you’re employed by someone else, you can still learn how to legally avoid paying taxes. This method will help reduce or eliminate your tax liability going forward (while, of course, you’re still responsible for any taxes you currently owe).

Instructions for How to Avoid Paying Taxes Legally

  1. Correct Information Returns: If paid under an SSN (Social Security Number) as an individual, reach out to your employer and rectify any information returns they have on file (such as W-4, I-9, 1099, W-8BEN, etc.).
  2. Update the Document: Sign the document, replacing your name with the trust name. At the bottom, sign as NAME, TTEE (short for Trustee).
  3. Provide Incentive: To encourage your employer, let them know you’re willing to sign as an Independent Contractor. This would allow them to remove any benefits (health, dental, medical, etc.) typically provided to employees.
  4. Tax Reporting: Once paid into the trust, the company usually sends a W-4 or 1099 to the IRS on your behalf. Don’t resist this step.

Important Note: Your employer or their CPA should already be aware that payments made to an Independent Contractor aren’t subject to employment-tax withholding. Independent Contractors are required to pay these taxes themselves if owed.
