They made the mistake of never officially closing the 501(c)3 named Indianapolis Baptist Temple in 2009 and opened up a new entity under the same name as a 508(c)1(a).

Greg let the filing dates pass and decided to let the organization come to a close. He did this without notifying the state or IRS properly.

Something didn’t sit right with the IRS agent, so an investigation was launched. When the first analyst came by in 2010, it alerted the government to numerous violations:

  1. They didn’t withhold income taxes for W-2 employees for 16 years
  2. The church supported local political parties and affiliates
  3. The church spoke out against Gay Rights which is now supported by the government

For these violations, the federal government deemed Indianapolis Baptist Temple as a ‘domestic terrorist threat’. And sent the full force of the local police and a number of federal agents to assuredly destroy those ‘dangerous religious zealots’ who practice abstinence and forgiveness.

So where was the light at the end of the tunnel?

Once Pastor Dixon resolved the conflict in late 2013, he officially closed the State Church 501(c)3 and re-opened the church as a 508(c)1(a).

For the last decade Indianapolis Baptist Temple LEGALLY hasn’t had to file a single tax return,
can still give its donors tax-deductible receipts, speak freely on the pulpit, support political candidates and even allow their own 1099 workers self-report their income.
