April 18th is the official deadline to file your federal tax return, (in most instances your state tax return, too).
To avoid being hit with any potential late filing or late payment penalties – you must file and pay any remaining federal income taxes you owe by April 18th, unless you file for an extension.
Need more time?
You can file an extension and get an automatic five-month extension to file your federal income taxes, meaning they won’t be due until October 15. However, to do so, you’ll need to submit your request to the IRS by April 18th.
HOWEVER…
An extension to file is not an extension to pay what you owe. You still must pay any remaining federal taxes owed on your income by April 18th, if you want to avoid a potential late payment penalty. And if you’re owed a refund, taking longer to file your taxes means you will wait longer to get your refund.
