How Do You Get Out of a Speeding Ticket

Wondering how do you get out of a speeding ticket?

What excuses have you given an officer to try and get out of a ticket?

Many people make the unfortunate mistake of stating: “I didn’t know” when being questioned by a judge in court as to why they were speeding.

What Not to Do When Trying to Get Out of a Speeding Ticket

Hopefully you will think twice if you are ever in this position and avoid the urge to blurt out this excuse, or any excuse for that matter.

Stating that you weren’t aware of your vehicle’s speed while driving is clearly not a wise response. The same can be said of the following defenses that fall flat in court:

“I wasn’t thinking.”

“No one was around.”

“I was late for work.”

“My kids were late for school.”

The list goes on of poorly thought-out responses. In fact, according to AAA here are the top 10 excuses people give for speeding.

Carinsurance.com recently did a survey in 2021 of 1,000 drivers and found that only 12% of respondents lied when they gave excuses, which was a significant drop to 2020’s survey when about one-third admitted they lied.

2021 results:

  • I haven’t given an excuse to avoid a ticket — 56%
  • It was the truth, so I hoped being honest would get me out of the ticket — 33%
  • It was a fib this time because I used it before when it was true and it got me out of a ticket — 9%
  • Even though it was a lie, I hoped it would get me out of the ticket — 3%
43% of men are more apt to use excuses to avoid a speeding citation compared to 69% of women that said they’ve never done that.

Only 25% of drivers between 18 and 24 years old said they haven’t given an excuse to get out of a speeding ticket.

That’s compared to about three-quarters of drivers over 55 years old who said they’ve never given an excuse to sidestep a speeding ticket.

But the bottom line is: either the offense was committed or it wasn’t.

The law is all-or-nothing: you either committed the violation or you didn’t.

It doesn’t matter what the excuse is.

If a police officer says you were speeding and you admit this through an excuse of any kind – consider yourself convicted.

This may seem like basic advice, but you would be amazed how many people are unnecessarily convicted and fined for tickets that could have been dismissed.
